when entering a new bug for any product at bugzilla.mozilla.org, Step 1 is
"search for your bug". one can enter text like "error 660099" and get a hit for
bug 98107, but entering "error -8173" does not bring up bug 188856. in fact,
the negative number seems to have the opposite effect desired. searching using
negative numbers on the standard query page (
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/query.cgi ) seems to work fine.

QuickSearch works like Google. Putting a minus (-) in front of something means
you want bugs that don't contain that.
Interestingly enough, just like Google, if I quote the number, the search works.
I entered this:
error "-8173"
into QuickSearch and it did find bug 188856
