Steps to reproduce:
Using Debian sid/unstable with thunderbird 1:128.1.0esr-1, with bug 1912195 1 the message headers are downloaded at each start.
Actual results:
I am unable to use the inbox while the message headers are downloaded. I see the latest messages when moving the slider in the scrollbar to the bottom or use the End key, but the message list is constantly updated so the mouse cannot be used.
Expected results:
The inbox should be usable.

Pressing p to move the previous unread message also does not work, and the message seems to be selected from the small glimse I get from the message list, but it is not shown. Then the message list keeps updating again.

Sometime I get lucky after pressing p sometimes the selected message is shown.

I think I see the same problem when I "repair" a folder. Since all the headers are re-fetched on repair, if you have enough messages in the folder and you try to click on a given message and the list starts scrolling, it sometimes doesn't open or opens the wrong message. I see this with my "bugzilla@mozilla" bug mail folder containing, presently, 1386 messages with no offline store. So there does seem to be a problem here.
But just to be clear, once the headers are all re-fetched and the message list stops moving, I can open a selected message OK. Also, this bug does not just affect Inbox but any folder that requires header fetches that trigger message list scrolling.
One other observation: I sort by "Order Received" (since I often need to know the imap UID of the a message for debug purposes). I just noticed that the problem didn't occur (or at least I didn't see it) when sorting by "Date" (the default sort order).

Please see bug 1908761 comment 20. Is this applicable to your message list?

For me, this doesn't seem to be related to quick search issues in that bug. I just try to open a message while downloading headers and the list is auto-scrolling and it doesn't open the one I clicked.
I just updated my self-built daily to yesterday's tip. When I entered comment 3, code was a bit old (last updated at July 1 about) but seemed faster doing the repair/header downloads. Now it is difficult to grab the scroll bar and move around while download is is progress and download taking longer (maybe because I'm now farther from router, not sure). Also, now with latest c-c code, see the problem with both column sort "Order Received" and "Date". Haven't tried any other column sorts.

Thanks. So maybe this shouldn't depend on bug 1912195.

Paul, are you using Cards View or Table View for the message list?
