Steps to reproduce:

I have Thunderbird set up so that when a message is removed, Thunderbird automatically opens the next message.

1. I remove a message by archiving or deleting.
2. Thunderbird automatically moves to the next message and opens it.

It also seems to happen when I click anywhere within Thunderbird that is not on a message card in the message list.

Actual results:

The message card stays gray. The vertical gray bar appears next to the card of the active message.

Expected results:

The card would be highlighted with the set highlighted color, as if the message was clicked on with the mouse.

Using Thunderbird 'Dark Theme' OR 'System Theme' ( Windows is set for apps to use dark theme.)

Do not need to Delete or Archive to reproduce this issue.
In addition to the auto open of next email when an item is Deleted or archived etc
Just select email and swap the view produces same problem.
Problem is reproducable.

• Using 'Table View'
• select email to read in Message Pane

At this point, email in list is selected and focused - strong highlight background colour
Message displays in Message Pane.

• Click on icon to swap the view

Actual Result

immediately notice email is still 'selected but no focus', so a paler background than background shown in Table view.
Message still displays in Message Pane.

• Select 'Card View'

Actual Result
Email in list - previously selected shows a grey strip on left side
Email is not highlighted at all as if never selected. SAme colour background as every other unselected message.
Email previously selected is still visible in Message Pane

• Click on icon and swap back to 'Table View'

Actual Result
Email in list is selected but not focused
background is paler than the darker theme - so obvious which email in list is selected.
Message still displays in Message Pane.

Note: in 'Light' theme, the selected email is shown as grey strip and background has a pale grey when all other non selected emails have the more white background. Not exactly very obvious nor clear, but exists.

Expected Result
As I manually selected the email in Table View, changing the view from Table to Card View
Then email in list should display:
a blue strip on left
background colour of selected email should use 'selected and focused' colour.
This does not happen.

If I deleted/archived email then I did not manually select the auto opened email.
I would expect the use of 'selected but not focused' to be used - this occurs in Light theme BUT it's barely visible - it does not occur in dark or dark system theme.

Some people may disagree and say if item is selected and it has focus - even it auto selected by Thunderbird.
Those people may expect blue strip and selected background colour as highlight on email in list.
That is something to be discussed.

Either way there is a problem emails in list. They do not have a distinct obvious background colour when selected but not focused.

Some people may find that grey strip for 'selected but not focused' is not so obvious.
People use the background colour of email in list to determine whether something is selected or not. When there is very little contrast or in this case no contrast it becomes an issue for anyone but even worse for those with poor eyesight.

This issue may get fixed soon as per bug 1913329

Item will not be selected with the blue but the 'selected and unfocused' background colour should get improved.
