Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a webpage (page 1) in a new tab.
  2. Follow links on that page to navigate to a different page (page 2)
  3. Follow links on that page to navigate to another different page (page 3).
  4. Press the Back button in the browser or the Android UI (happens with both).

NOTE: The pages I tested this with do not use JavaScript to modify the page. They are normal hyperlinks that request an actual new webpage.

Actual results:

The browser navigates to the very first page in that tab's history (page 1).

Expected results:

The browser navigates to the previous page (page 2).

I didn't include my useragent since I have it spoofed to avoid ever being served a mobile version of a webpage, but I'm on Firefox for Android Nightly 131.0a1 (Build #2016041431) on Android 13.

Oh, and I have the Menu Redesign and Navigation Toolbar enabled in Secret Settings. I have not tested whether this occurrs with either of these turned off.

Thanks for reporting this bug! I just tested on a Samsung A35, Android 14 on 131 and could not reproduce the issue. Can you provide us with a video of the issue please, along with your device and its Android version? Also, if you tap and hold on the back button on the toolbar, you can see your stack of navigated websites. Can you verify if this stack is correct? Thanks

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra on Android 13. The stack shows correctly, it just jumps to the very bottom of the stack rather than the previous entry.

I have noticed that it only seems to occur on websites that use GET parameters to differentiate pages rather than subfolders or files. For example, if you're at example.com/index.php?page=post and you click on a link to example.com/index.php?page=post&pid=2, then a link to example.com/index.php?page=user&username=JohnDoe, clicking back takes you to just ?page=post. They're all loaded from the same document, index.php, so that might be relevant. They are, nevertheless, completely different pages, and some of the sites I've experienced this on serve millions of different unique pages from a single index.php at the server's base directory.

I was not able to reproduce this issue on the Fenix Nightly 132.0a1 from 9/16, nor on 9/17.
Tested with:

  • Realme GT Master Edition (Android 13),
  • Google Pixel 6 (Android 15), and
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Android 9).

I will try toggling the pref mentioned in that ticket and see if the behavior stops.

This seems likely to be a case of the issue that should be fixed now that bug 1917369 has been resolved.

  8. If it didn't revert back to the original query, try to edit the search query yet again (on Google.com and not the Address bar) and it should revert. Sometimes it takes 3 searches to get it to trigger.

I am experiencing this behaviour on one of two Android 15 devices I have.

Both are running the same build of Firefox:

Both installations of Firefox are configured identically.

The device experiencing the bug is a Xiaomi 14, running Android 15 build AQ3A.240627.003, 1 Jan 2025 security patch date
Being a Xiaomi device, Firefox has been added to "Autostart" and is also set as a "Locked" app. These are necessary to prevent Firefox from being pushed out of memory quickly. This can happen in the amount of time it takes to switch to a password management app (BitWarden) or a 2FA app (Aegis). Enabling Firefox in "Autostart" negates this issue.

The device not experiencing the bug is a Oppo Find N5, running Android 15 build CPH2671_15.0.1.202(EX01), 1 Feb 2025 security patch date
No such tweaks were necessary for correct functionality of Firefox on this device.

Same back button issues with Google searches on Samsung S21 Ultra for both stable 136.0 (Build #2016076311) and beta 137.0b4 (Build #2016078383).

I'm having the same problem with google search for quite a time now. But in my case the last page visited appears as next page in the stack of navigated websites.

Happens with stable 136.0.2 (Build #2016079799) on Galaxy S24 with One UI 6.1 and security patch level 1 February 2025. Issue still occured after a reset of Firefox.

This is an issue when I'm using stable 137.0 (Build #2016081319), and I'm able to replicate it using the (In reply to Syl Surette from comment #15)

I was able to reproduce this issue on Firefox for Android 137.0.2, 138.0, Beta 138.0b9, and Nightly 139.0a1 from 4/23.
Tested with: OnePlus 5 (Android 10), and Google Pixel 6 (Android 16).

The STR are:

  1. Load google.com or enter a search query (e.g. "trouble").
  2. Tap on a link from the search results provided.
  3. Tap the back button/do the back gesture.
  4. Edit your search query on the search field of google.com, NOT in the address bar, and search again (e.g. "proof").
  5. Tap on a link from the provided search results.
  6. Tap the back button/do the back gesture, and observe.

Actual results:
The search query displayed after step 6 is for "trouble" not for "proof".
If, at step 4 you search for a term in the address bar, the issue is not reproducible.

I'll confirm the issue.

Hi,

I am experiencing the same issue as described in this thread. It has been happening for some time now.

A description of the issue:
*Search for something in google
*Modify the search to add to the search query

  • Click on a link in the updated search results
  • Go back (either via Firefox's back or the system back buttons)
  • Browser returns to the original search query.
  • Going forward via Firefox's button take you to the link that was clicked.
  • Going back again shows the original google search results.
  • Clicking on the search box shows the updated search query.
