On macOS, we would like to "tether" the sidebar button closer to the three-dot menu, switching the current large padding between the menu and the sidebar for a regular padding we have between icons.

The attached screenshot looks as if you want to completely remove the extra drag space on both the left and the right side. I don't have a strong opinion about this. But why only in verticals tabs mode and not in horizontal mode? I would argue that it's either useful in both modes or not useful in both modes (in horizontal mode it's the empty space on the left of the Firefox View button and on the right of the all tabs button).
In horizontal tabs mode, the sidebar button is positioned in the toolbar, underneath the three-dot menu, so there's no awkward spacing.
I think it's worthwhile to handle adjustments to the padding between the three-dot-menu and tabs in the horizontal mode in a separate bug, as more folks might have an opinion on this - after all, unlike vertical tabs, this would affect release version and primary browser functionality. FWIW, this padding in Firefox is larger than in any other browser.

In horizontal tabs mode, the sidebar button is positioned in the toolbar, underneath the three-dot menu, so there's no awkward spacing.
In the vertical tabs mode, you have a large empty space between the control buttons and the sidebar button on the left side, and between the menu button and the window edge on the right side.
In the horizontal tabs mode, you have a large empty space between the control buttons and the Firefox View button on the left side, and between the all tabs button and the window edge on the right side.
So I would say it's exactly the same issue, just with different buttons. That's why I propose to do whatever you want to do, but for both modes. I attached a screenshot to show what I mean.

There was some more discussion on this in the leads call and it will need more UX evaluation as we shouldn't remove the drag space entirely from there.
