I was looking into this bug and by chance came up with an interesting idea. How would everyone feel if along with being able to select from a set of categories, you could also set it to a category not already listed (i.e. making the category list editable)? Not sure if the idea is a good one or not, but I'll attached the patches anyway and see what everyone thinks. Also, this just happens to fix this current bug as well.
Summary: dlg new event: initial height of listbox 'category' to small → [Patch] dlg new event: initial height of listbox 'category' to small

Charles' patch sounds like a good idea, I think many people expect this behavior (I know my wife does...) Is it going to be in the new build?

Those patches don't actually save the information, they just allow the user to edit the list. You still need to save the information to the preferences, don't you?

Charles, sorry for the late feedback. While your patch solves the immediate issue, it introduces a much bigger regression. At least here, I can no longer type in text into textfield in the new event or new task dialog. Could you look into that?

Build-Identifier: Mozilla Calendar 2005011112-cal / Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 Calendar installed with Firefox Extension Manager. Problem: UI 'New/Edit Events' The listbox 'category' should be a few dots higher, just as it is, when you select an category item ... an old or an new problem!? Furthermore: I can't resize the 'New/Edit' popup window. Reproducible: Always

making the field editable is the wrong solution. (It might be a goog thing, but not to fix this bug)

Works for me on trunk. Reporter, if you can still reproduce using a nightly build, please reopen the bug, but be sure to include your version information.
