The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Fenix::Tabs' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Tried on the latest Nightly on a Pixel tablet with Android 15 and seems like when tapping on the "+" button we get the keyboard to be able to access another url / start search.
Only after that a new tab will be opened for the search/new url.
Users might also tap back and would remain on the homescreen / return to their previous tab so there might be no need for a blank new tab.
(regarding the back gesture we have a small bug on Android 15, soon to be fixed - bug 1898059)
If this is the behaviour you're seeing it's the expected behavior.
If you're seeing a different behavior can you post a video showcasing the issue?

Latest Nightly on Lenovo P12 tab running Android 14: https://youtu.be/iCZRLRvFfQY
All extensions disabled and it's just opening new tabs over the existing one.

Thanks for the update!
Tried to follow the video but it isn't clear for me when the "new tab" button is clicked without anything happening. Can you post a shorter video focusing on just this scenario?
Is the above linked YouTube video a recording from the Lenovo P12 tab?
Based on how little space is in the status bar and the fact that the tab strip isn't shown it looks like the above is a recording from a phone rather than a tablet?
Tagging also QA to confirm this / get more details about the issue.

QA could you try to reproduce this with a tablet? We haven't been able to reproduce so I'm moving this to a Release blocker but as the top priority to investigate.

We were unable to reproduce this issue in the latest Nightly 134.0a1 from 11/20. The "New Tab" button works as expected on both normal and private browsing modes.
Tested with the following devices:
- Lenovo TB X606X (Android 10)
- Lenovo Yoga Tab 11 (Android 12)
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra (Android 14)
- Samsung Tab S8 Ultra 5G (Android 14)
- Huawei MediaPad M2 (Android 5.1.1)
I'll update this bug to "NEW" since it can still be reproduced by the user, and we'll keep investigating on our side as well.

@Paul Can you please try to activate "Show taps" on your device and post another quick video?
(Can try these steps to temporarily activate that option)
Sorry for asking more from your but we are unable to reproduce and seeing the exact steps you are taking might help us understand the issue better.
Also did you perhaps observed this issue on other devices?

It wasn't menitioned but I think "Homepage As A New Tab" is enabled
Thank you!
This could be it!
Curious if :pwd can confirm this and that if disabling that (incomplete) feature results in no issue.

I'm incredibly sorry, disabling "Homepage As A New Tab" indeed fixed the problem. My apologies for wasting everyone's time and effort.

No worries, we now know to be extra careful about that feature in this scenario and helps in ensuring it's stability.
Please note that for the time being that feature is incomplete and so bugs might still arise, if you see other issues feel free to open tickets to get those situations under development's radar.
Thank you both for the support!
Tagging :gl to decide if this can be closed now or be left for later work.
