Clicking mailto: link while Thunderbird is open fails with error: "Thunderbird is already running, but not responding"

Steps to reproduce:
Opening Thunderbird, then going to Firefox and clicking a "mailto:" URL.
Actual results:
Thunderbird showed a message error and didn't open a new e-mail window.
MESSAGE:
Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use a different profile.
Expected results:
A new e-mail window should have opened with the specifics included in the URL.
This has worked in the past, with the same profiles for both Thunderbird and Firefox. Tried creating a new Firefox profile with the same results

This is in general working. I imagine there is some issue with how default mail client is set up on your system. Try resetting that.

This is currently not Thunderbird's problem. This is Firefox's problem. see
