Some users are complaining they can't get off of Vertical Tabs. The most recent example I've seen:
https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/firefox-sidebar-and-vertical-tabs-try-them-out-in-nightly/m-p/80175/emcs_t/S2h8ZW1haWx8dG9waWNfc3Vic2NyaXB0aW9ufE00NlFRMDNFSEFMUDNZfDgwMTc1fFNVQlNDUklQVElPTlN8aEs#M30714

That user spent two hours and couldn't remove the vertical tabs.

There are instructions ( https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/sidebar-and-vertical-tabs-release-channel-experimentation/td-p/78966 ) but they aren't automatically shown to users before they get forced into vertical tabs.

Hi, the feedback on connect is being followed closely by our product and UX designers so we're trying to keep bugzilla clear for actual bugs while giving product/UX time to address user feedback with concrete solutions. It's also very clear from that users comments that they clicked on the vertical tabs option as part of the onboarding, not that they "got forced into it".

Clicking "restore defaults" in the "customize toolbar" menu does actually reset vertical tabs to horizontal tabs so its unclear why it didn't work for that user which I'll try to follow up on.
