Steps to reproduce:
Selected a message in one of my folders
Actual results:
Nothing. The message headers are displayed as they should, but not the message itself.
Expected results:
The contents of the message should have been displayed in the preview window. Instead, nothing. T'bird appears to be v e r y s l o w l y reading through every message in the (IMAP) folder and then, after several minutes, displaying the message contents in the preview window. Displaying of the contents used to be more or less instant. I'm using a Gmail back-end with SMTP.

Tried Help | Troubleshoot mode?
If that doesn't help, try folder properties | Repair folder?
Thanks. I have now tried Help...Troubleshoot Mode and Folder Properties...Repair Folder.
Neither of those made a difference.
I have restarted T'bird several times, also restarted computer. Win11/64, latest version of Windows.
The length of time it takes to display message contents seems to be directly related to the number of messages in the folder. The more messages there are, the longer it takes.
Nothing has changed in my environment in recent weeks, other than the usual automatic updates to Thunderbird. I believe this bizarre and unexpected and new behavior is some kind of bug in a recent version of Thunderbird. It has something to do with how T'bird fetches messages from the server (in this case Gmail). I don't have any POP accounts with messages stored locally, so I unfortunately can't test that case. But server-based messages are definitely not be handled properly and as they used to be.
To rephrase the problem:
When I select a folder, all of the messages in that folder are immediately displayed. The data displayed are, of course the message headings; from, to, subject, etc. When I highlight or click on a message, T'bird used to instantly or at least quickly display the message content in the preview window. Now it doesn't. It waits and waits and waits and then eventually shows the message. The wait time appears to be related, possibly, to the age of the message (how many years old) and/or to how many messages are in that folder.
In the process of testing, I discovered that the message headers (from, to, subject, etc) are ALSO not displayed in some cases. If I click on a folder that I haven't used in a while, T'bird shows "No message found." Then, after working for a while, the messages show up. I can see T'bird working hard from the Task Manager display.
I've been using T'bird for 20+ years, have never seen this behavior.
PS. Additional points.
-
T'bird behaves the same way in Troubleshooting Mode as it does in regular mode, at least with regard to the problem being discussed.
-
I just clicked on a rarely-used folder and (a) immediately saw a "no message found" display, (b) followed by the display of message headers 65 seconds later. When highlight a specific message, I waited another 20 seconds for the message contents to be displayed.
-
Windows itself is on automatic updates, so I always have the latest public version.
