When mail in the 3pane is sorted by a column that only has an icon 
representation, we don't show the direction of the sort.  I'm sure this is 
because we don't want to widen the column just for that and there isn't room to 
put the arrow in.  I wonder though whether we could do something simple like 
moving the existing icon up and putting a line arrow below it (or the reverse) 
to convey that sorting is on that column in that direction?

jglick thinks something like this would be a good idea, but not a high priority.
