Tracking bug.
To reproduce:
Open a new mail window.
Do not type anything. Just drag and drop a link.
Take the caret to the start of the link by clicking with your mouse.
Start typing.
Link continues - ie, the newly typed text becomes part of the link.
Still present in latest mozilla trunk
