I was deleting files from Google Driver by using its web interface. I had a couple of thousand files within a folder, which in general made the operation of selecting and deleting files very slow including a high load of the CPU. While that particular operation was running the UI is not responsive. It can be seen in the following recorded Gecko profile: https://share.firefox.dev/41T3f2N.

There is also another profile which shows quite a lot of layout operations: https://share.firefox.dev/4gRx1t9

How does this behavior compare to Chrome? (I don't have any such folders to test with :-))

Chrome was slower as well but not that slow. I had to remove all the files by last year so I don't have something to test anymore. But it should be probably easy to reproduce when you stick about 4000 files of about 1MB in size to such a folder on Drive.
