[Affected versions]:

  • Firefox Beta 135.0b2 (Build ID: 20250108092002)
  • Firefox Nightly 136.0a1 (Build ID: 20250109093225)

[Affected Platforms]:

  • Windows 10 x64
  • Ubuntu 24.04 x64
  • macOS 14.7.1

[Prerequisites]:

  • Have a Firefox Beta 135.0b2 "en-US" locale build installed.
  • Follow the instructions from this TestRail test case in order to trigger an IAB banner.

[Steps to reproduce]:

  1. Open a new tab and make sure an IAB Banner is displayed.
  2. While having the IAB Banner in view, reload the NewTab page.
  3. Observe the behavior of the IAB Banner.

[Expected result]:

  • The banner is instantly loaded and displayed.

[Actual result]:

  • The Alt Text of the banner is displayed for a second before it loads.

[Notes]:

  • This issue is reproducible with both the Billboard and Leaderboard IAB Banners.
  • The issue is also reproducible when returning to the NewTab page if the banner was previously clicked and the user was redirected to the placeholder page.
  • Attached is a screen recording of the issue.

A must-fix before releasing this feature globally.

I had a discussion with Anna from the accessibility team about this bug.

The alt-text that briefly shows up prior to image load is expected browser behaviour on Firefox.
If we try to remove the text before image load or if we change the alt-text color to be transparent, it would no longer be deemed inaccessible. Alt-text displays if an image loads slower on slow connections/fails to load/if images are blocked by default, so it's a good fallback to have in almost any case.

I'm confident enough to say that this bug doesn't need to be fixed + shouldn't be a blocker for launching the IAB Banners to release.

I'm going to go ahead and close this bug as a WONTFIX. Thanks for filing it, though!
