When dling file http://m-net.arbornet.org/~cjr/smite.tar.gz , the file is dled
but is an unreadable archive. The dl was then tested with IE, and the file
worked as intended. Therefore, it is concluded that the problem is a Moz
specific problem

REOPEN: mozilla 1.3f, win98.
Winzip says it had problem reading the header.
Chris, are the other tarballs you mention as working, do they end in .gz?

Summary: file (smite.tar.gz) will not download in Mozilla 1.1 or 1.2.1 → file (smite.tar.gz) does not uncompress after download
smite.tar.gz downloaded for me as smite.tar (automatically un-gz'ed) in Mac
Mozilla. Then Stuffit autolaunched and untared it. Have you tried lopping off
the .gz suffix and see if it untars?
Possibly related to bug 144334.

Bill, could the reason for this failure be because ftp doesn't implement the
nsIEncodedChannel.h?

I also get corrupted *.tar.gz downloads with Mozilla.
Had the problem since Version 1.3, and now I use Mozilla 1.5 beta Build ID
2003082704. Using Wndows XP Professional.
For ALL *tar.gz, the downloaded file is saved as *.tar.gz.tar and cannot be
opened under Winzip, Total Commander, Linux, or Cygwin. No other downloads are
corupted - only tar.gz
Old version, no further responses, URL is gone. Resolving as WFM.
Feel free to reopen if you can provide a new URL which does not work with
current builds. There are some issues remaining, see Bug 233047.
