2. doubleclick a newsgroup in sidebar, or open newsgroup by clicking a link in
the broswer window (eg: news://192.168.1.1/admin)

Actual Results:
mozilla popups a windows that says "Sending of message failed ..."
Expected Results:

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".
This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.
Thank you for your help in this matter.

This should actually be updated to read:
Unable to send mail to newsgroup from Inbox unless newsgroup is first selected
and expanded from the 'folders' pane.
What seems to happen is Tbird will attempt to otherwise connect to the nntp
server on port 110 instead of 119 even though the pulldown for "newsgroup, to,
cc, bcc, reply-to, followup-to" has "newsgroup" selected. This has been an
issue, on the Sun Sparc platform at least, for a couple years.
Unless this is actually a feature, or a duplicate of another bug, I would
recommend leaving this marked 'un-resolved'.
I just verified the behaviour in Tbird 1.0.6 20050722 and running snoop on
the Sun INND server. steps to reproduce are below:
- select Inbox from Folders windows
- select File -> New message
- Click 'To:' pulldown arrow and select 'Newsgroup'
- address to the 'test' newsgroup (or another newsgroup existing on news server)
- enter 'test' for subject and testtest in body
- fire up snoop on news server and filter for client ip address and port 100 eg:
# snoop 10.10.10.34 port 110
- click 'Send' in Tbird and you will see your Tbird client attempt a POP3
connection to the newsgroup server

I don't think it's OS dependent.
If you select your Inbox and start composing, the identity ("From") chosen is
that of the respective mail server, which is POP3 for you, I suppose. If you
send this message, it thus gets sent as mail - and which news server should it
have selected to send news to, anyway? I have several news servers configured
and choosing one randomly is most probably a bad idea...

I agree random would not be an ideal solution. Trying to connect to a server on
port 110 when trying to *SEND* an email is incorrect anyhow. That should be
port 25 in any case, but that is a completely different issue.
This bugid has to do with functionality that used to be in the Mozilla codebase
prior to some flavor of 1.6 and has since disappeared for some reason. Perhaps
a 'Set as Default' in the account settings should apply to the Newgroup account
as it does for Email accounts. Currently that option is greyed out for news.
