On communicator 4.7 clicking within a box with an option in it (such as the boxes
on the bugzilla report form) will deselect the current selection if you don't
click on a new selection. In Mozilla this doesn't work. If you don't click on a
new selection it doesn't deselect your current selection.

I'm not sure who owns this problem, but I think Steve knows about it.
I'll let him help out.
tjw19: sorry, I don't understand your bug report. Could you please give a
specific control on a specific page? If you're talking about combo-boxes,
so an example might be:
URL = http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Browser
Control = OS
or if you're talking about lists, an example might be:
URL = http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Browser
Control = Component
If you could be more specific about what you do, that would help too. Where do
you click? What is the state of the control before and after the click?
Thanks!

From private email response to my question:
I'm talking about the boxes of the type [ version == other ] which have only one
option in them. In communicator 4.7 clicking on the white space in the box (not
on the word "other") will deselect the word other if it is already selected. In
Mozilla (the last one I used so it may be fixed by now) this doesn't happen. I'm
not sure this is serious enough to be considered a "bug", but I would hope there
was a way to deselect something like that. Notice that in 4.7 if the box is
filled with entries and has no empty space it is impossible (I think, I tried
everything I could think of) to make no selection in that box after you have
already made one. Perhaps by clicking on the very edge of the box or control
clicking you should be able to deselect your selection.
That's it. Good luck and happy hunting

This is Mac platform specific behavior, Windows doesn't do this. There is
currently nothing in the code to either support or not support this, it's just
the way the current implementation works. marking as posiible enhancement and
later.

I think my testcase demonstrates the problem described in comment 0, and it is
reproducible using FizzillaMach/2003-04-11-08-trunk, so setting OS to Mac OS X.
OS: Mac System 8.6 → MacOS X
Summary: [PP] Mac - Clicking in empty area of listbox should clear selection → Mac - Clicking in empty area of listbox should clear selection

In fact, using Netscape Communicator 4.8 for Mac, the testcase does work as
expected. Adding 4xp.

this should not be marked pp as it doesn't work this way for windows either (both FF and suite).
Why was this changed from enhancement to minor?
Comment 16•14 years ago
|

This sounds like an enhancement request. FF, Safari & Chrome behave the same way.
AFAICT, the HTML standards for select elements do not suggest the requested behavior.

Other UAs don't behave in the way that is requested here (I tested IE, Opera(presto), Chrome, Safari).
The HTML spec doesn't say anything about this behavior:
