User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/132.0.0.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/132.0.0.0

Steps to reproduce:

Version 128.7.1esr. I had over 100 message in the trash folder when I emptied the trash. (I don't recall the exact count.) Then I deleted two more messages.

Actual results:

The trash folder contains two messages, but the message count is 103. I will attach a screen shot. I looked at my email account directly with a browser, and it also shows two messages in the trash folder.

Expected results:

Obviously, the message count should reflect the actual number of messages. If Thunderbird is unsure of the count, e.g. while it contacts the server, it should not display an incorrect count, maybe display no count at all or an indication that fetching the count is in progress. (That is not the case right now--I have received and sent other messages, so the server connection is good, but the count is still 103.)

Reproducible?

As a workaround in case the count got out of sync you can right click and mark the folder read.

Component: Untriaged → Folder and Message Lists
Summary: Count to trash messages not accurate → Count to trash messages not accurate after I emptied the trash

I don't know how to reproduce the bug. It seems to appear randomly. Sometime, when I open the trash folder, the count is wrong, often double the correct number, and then corrects itself after a few seconds, presumably when Thunderbird contacts the server.
