User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:135.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/135.0

Steps to reproduce:

Launch Firefox
Notice Firefox is not updated.

Actual results:

I launch Firefox normally, it opens and closes immediately by itself, then Firefox re-opens automatically.

If i check the >Help "About Firefox" section there is a button to restart to update Firefox. It does not work.

Expected results:

Firefox should have updated itself, it does not.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Application Update' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please correct in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

Thanks for reporting the bug, if you close Firefox and wait about 10 seconds before reopening, does the application update?
If so, then it is a bug that we have a patch available for and should be resolved quite soon :)

Hi, that does not work no. Same happens as written in the bug report.

Thanks, are you on Firefox beta or Firefox release? And is it 135 or 136?

Can you also follow these steps to collect some debug logging so I can further investigate this issue, thanks

1.Navigate to about:config.
2. Set app.update.log to true.
3. Open the Browser Console either with the hotkey Control+Shift+J (Command+Shift+J on macOS), or via Hamburger Menu->More Tools->Browser Console
4. In the Filter textbox at the top, enter AUS:SVC to filter out everything except the update messages.
5. Navigate to the "Update" section of about:preferences. It should automatically check for an update.
6. Once the update check has completed, copy the messages out of the Browser Console and attach them to this bug.

Thanks, I see there is an error code in the logs you provided. I'd like to see some more logs to further pinpoint the issue, it's likely something that we've seen before.

Please do the following:

  1. Navigate to about:support
  2. Find the "Update Folder" entry and click "Open Folder".
  3. Open the updates directory.
  4. Inside, you should find files named last-update.log and backup-update.log. Attach these files (and any other files in the directory) to this bug

If possible, can you also go to your terminal, and run icacls [update directory path] and icacls [install directory path] to check the permissions of those folders?

The path for the update directory would look like: C:\ProgramData\Mozilla-1de4gtc8-1241-4177-a810-e594e8d1fsss\updates\6F193BAC56814779\updates
(the alphanumeric values are unique for everyone)
The path for the install directory is most likely C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\

Thank you!
