Additional Info inc. Background and Workaround:
Platform: Linux
Thunderbird ESR crashes whenever I open emails from a particular business's customer support team. This has been reproducible across all the versions of Thunderbird ESR I've used since 19th December 2023, up to and including the current version (128.6.0 64-bit). The problem was raised with the sender and they concluded it had nothing to do with them. All the emails from their customer support team cause the crash, without exception, with the latest such email being from mid-February 2025.
Selecting one of the emails in question and choosing "Edit as New Message" allows the email to be read and replied to without causing the crash. There doesn't appear to be anything obviously odd about the content that would be causing this.
I'm happy to submit copies of the emails and other info, e.g. logs, but as I value my privacy I'd appreciate communication on the best way to do this first. Thank you.
Actual results:
Thunderbird opens a new tab for the email then immediately crashes to the desktop before displaying any content. The email is still marked as Unread when Thunderbird is re-opened.
Expected results:
Email opens in a new tab and can be read without issues.

Does it crash if you open the message which has been saved to a file as .eml? Send to Magnus whom I have just copied on this bug report.
Also, visit Help > Troubleshooting information and find your crash IDs, described at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb. Paste the IDs here in this bug report.

Yes.
Send to Magnus whom I have just copied on this bug report.
Glad to. Please supply a public GPG key for Magnus so that I can encrypt the .eml file and then attach it to this bug report.

I have no crash IDs. Crash Reporter is non-functional for my distro.

You can find my key on the keyserver (use mkmelin at thunderbird.net)

What is your distro?
I've uploaded some additional information, encrypted to Magnus's GPG key.

I don't think that info brings us much forwards unfortunately.
Anyway, as it does not crash for me, perhaps it could be due to distro customizations or bugs e.g. in GnuPG if you're using that.
Did you try using a build from https://thunderbird.net instead of the distro installed version?
I agree that distro customizations are probably responsible. I've uploaded some more information that you should find useful. It's encrypted to the same public key as before.

Thought I should add that the distro customizations are unlikely to be anything beyond changing Thunderbird's default settings. I don't want you to get the wrong idea that Thunderbird is somehow non-standard and therefore probably not supported by Mozilla.

So do you crash with a build from https://thunderbird.net?
