Steps to reproduce:

New incoming emails can not be deleted for ~5 seconds.
If I click on the "delete" button on an email that has just arrived the click does nothing. It takes about 4-5 seconds until I can delete that message. Any button press before gets disregarded.

Thanks for reporting this. Can you try the steps at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems and attach a performance profile to this bug if none of them work?

You are using beta? Or release channel?
