Steps to reproduce:

I noticed once again two missing messages from one of my mail folders.

I always wonder how this does happen - again and again some threads are broken because of messages in between are missing.

But today it was more obvious since I had read those messages some hours ago - and now they are gone

Actual results:

Messages which I sent to a mailing list came back as expected - but some hours later they are not shown any more.

Expected results:

Messages should not disappear on their own.

I have checked both trash, junk and all other folders via a search by the subject.

Those are local folders where mails are sorted to from POP3 inbox accounts.

I also tried a "repair folder" - but the messages are still gone.

Usually I suspected a delete by mistake - it takes a "delete" key press only. But I don't think that I had pressed delete multiple times today by mistake - and even if, the messages still should have to be in my trash folder, right?

Perhaps you have some filter you forgot about, one that is moving certain messages elsewhere?

Nope, no other filters, I guess - the items have stayed within the folder for about an hour, but two hours later they were gone. Mail is popped every 10 minutes.

Actually, this bug is much more annoying than expected. I had asked for some pdfs recently - and half of the replies with pdfs were gone a week later. I still could read them by the web viewer since I download them by POP3, leaving them on the server.

But I wonder where all these mails went to since they did not end up in the Deleted folder.

So I don't feel very confident, reading in the Folder Properties a statement "Sometimes the folder index (.msf) file becomes damaged and messages may appear missing or deleted messages continue showing, repairing the folder may fix these issues" -> Repair folder.

I want to be able to trust my mail program!

Is it only impacting message with attachments?
And only one folder? Which one?

So I don't feel very confident, reading in the Folder Properties a statement "Sometimes the folder index (.msf) file becomes damaged and messages may appear missing or deleted messages continue showing, repairing the folder may fix these issues" -> Repair folder.

This simply means that the index may not match what's in the folder, and the folder is the source of truth.

Flags: needinfo?(traut)

Yes, I noticed it mostly on mails with attachments. But that does also include mails without attachments in threads with some mails plus attachments.

I have noticed it mostly on my INBOX, while I also observe it on other mailboxes where threads are incomplete because of missing mails.
