Select All in preview pane, selects all messages In mail window.

Expected Results:  
I have tried to go to Edit menu, Select All when in preview pane mode, reading a
message, should select all of the messages text.
Just like if a message was opened, and you went to Edit, select all, it selects
all of the text in the message.
Maybe the solution is to have an option under Select ALL, then in the drop menu
under there, have text in messages, like there is one for Select Thread.

Does the message pane have focus when this happens? (Indicated by the
"focus-ring", a darker frame surrounding the focused pane)

This is the proper behavior.  Select All highlights the text when the focus is
on the preview pane, and highlights the messages when the focus is on the
message list.

Adding another option under the Edit/Select menu could be a good enhancement
request, but should be entered as a separate bug.
