195576 - system freezes while downloading last new mail message

When Mozilla Mail/News downloads any new messages from the ATT Canada mail server (inbox.attcanada.ca), the program locks up completely, with the status bar indicating e.g. "Receiving message 5 of 5"; I then have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down Mozilla, as even the browser window no longer responds to key or mouse events.

When I restart MailNews, typically all the new messages are in my mail box, but if I request the program to get new messages, it seems to try to download all the new messages again and lock up yet again. The exception seems to be if only one new message exists, in which case it reports no new mail on the server.

I initially encountered this problem using Norton Anti-Virus's Email Protection system when I tried to switch from Netscape 4 to Mozilla last week, but the problem persisted after I reconfigured MailNews to make a direct connection to the mail server.
