I'm tired of the prefs UI arguments slowing down development. The preferences
window should have a member of the tree at the very bottom with a field like this:

+------Manually edit a preference ----------------------------+

Name: [ ] Value: [ ]

+-------------------------------------------------------------+

The idea behind this is to make the manual editing of prefs something the would
be transparent to the average user. Doing that would take a lot of pressure for
the preferences UI and could mean we could remove a lot of UI in the window and
stop fighting over it.

This bug would be an easy fix with a lot of impact.
