User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312 Links (both text or image) does not work properly if web page (esp. most images not loaded yet) is still loading. This happens usually when a page contains lots of image, or takes long to download. The google URL given above is only an example page because it contains lots of images (links). This happens to other site, other pages too. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: a. While a page is still loading, click on a text link, and a "Save/download" box appear. Browser did not open the linked page. b. While a page is still loading, click on an image link, the browser will load the image instead of the linked page. just like "view image". Expected Results: Take user to the linked page.
The better place to test this is in google image search. http://images.google.com . Search anything. While pictures are loading, at the bottom, click on the "reault page: Previous < 1 2 3 > Next" Click on any page. sometimes it will show the loading image, sometimes it will open the "save/download" dialogue box, sometimes it will take you to the linked page (the right thing) .
I just ran into this on Linux (with Froogle and Mozilla 1.3 final), so it doesn't just affect WinXP.
I've seen this on Google pages and assumed it was because I had enabled pipelining. Proctor and Barry, do you have pipelining enabled? (about:config, look at network.http.pipelining.)
Component: Browser-General → Networking: HTTP
I don't anymore, for other reasons, but I might have had it enabled when I first experienced this bug. I haven't had the bug again with Mozilla 1.4a, but I guess I need to try 1.3 again to see whether pipelining makes a difference. (I might not get a chance to do that for several days, though.)
I am using Mozilla 1.4a too now. And i don't have that problem with 1.4a. I re-installed 1.3 build 2003032708 (after uninstalled 1.4a) , and the problem don't seems to appear anymore neither with or without pipelining enabled.

I have not seen this bug in many months so I'm going to remove my vote...
Summary: links not working properly if page is still loading → links not working properly if page is still loading (pipelining?)
From Barry's comment and the fact I can't reproduce this either in Mozilla 1.7/winxp this looks like it is a works for me. Proctor, please reopen if you can reproduce in a new build.
