Instead of opening the alert "The URL is not valid and can not be loaded" the text in the URL should (at least as an option) be sent as search string to the default search engine.

What do you get if you enable Edit\preferences\Navigator\Msart Browsing\[x]Internet Keywords ?
To be sendt of to a search engine each time i make a typo would be extremely annoying. Please resolve as WONTFIX.

I think there's an important distinction to be made here between "invalid" and "illegal". You can easily be meaning to type "mozilla.org" and type "moilla.org" instead. That would be invalid, and should still result in the error message, but it's not illegal - it has all of the permitted characteristics of a URL and it's only coincidental that there's no such site. On the other hand, if you type "Give me a recipe for apple pie." into the URL bar, there's no way that it could be confused with a typo for a URL - it's completely illegal. I don't see any reason why this shouldn't be redirected to a search engine. BTW: If I enable Internet Keywords and type "Give me a recipe for apple pie." I get the typical error message as reported in comment 0. (Actually, I currently get an "XML Parsing Error", but that's a different bug that's just been fixed.)
in that case: dup of bug 58867 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 58867 ***

REOPEN. This is the earliest instance of a bug trend I've been looking for for some time. Since Internet Keywords was set off by default, I've expected some users to type in the URL bar, and expect something to happen (often Internet Kewyords is assumed to point to <or BE> a search feature). In the past, Internet Keywords would fire automatically (like in FireFox), but now, it gives an error. You need to turn on the feature in the prefs. (Smart Browsing | Internet Keywords). See: http://www.mozilla.org/docs/end-user/internet-keywords.html

Found the earlier dupes... they were lost in "search" bug because of bug 53171.

XP -> All Benc, how many more dupes would it take to make a decision so that the outcome of Bug 100412 can be mended? Does the fact that this bug is REOPENED means there's a green light to do it? Prog.

I don't know. The number of duplicates is pretty low given the number of users over time. This only affects new users of new profiles. Also, for pure ease-of-use/power, the product focus is on FireFox. The general direction is to keep turnning off unnecessary features by default and let users decide who or what they will hookup. "What's related" was removed from the default tab list for similar reasons. Domain guessing is about to be turned off by default as well. There are two reasons for this: 1- The features are buggy (have you read all the bugs on IK before asking for it to be on by default?) 2- The features block testing of lower-level code, that should be made un-buggy first, like DNS and URL bar. Search has other problems that need to be fixed first.

MASS-CHANGE: This bug report is registered in the SeaMonkey product, but has been without a comment since the inception of the SeaMonkey project. This means that it was logged against the old Mozilla suite and we cannot determine that it's still valid for the current SeaMonkey suite. Because of this, we are setting it to an UNCONFIRMED state. If you can confirm that this report still applies to current SeaMonkey 2.x nightly builds, please set it back to the NEW state along with a comment on how you reproduced it on what Build ID, or if it's an enhancement request, why it's still worth implementing and in what way. If you can confirm that the report doesn't apply to current SeaMonkey 2.x nightly builds, please set it to the appropriate RESOLVED state (WORKSFORME, INVALID, WONTFIX, or similar). If no action happens within the next few months, we move this bug report to an EXPIRED state. Query tag for this change: mass-UNCONFIRM-20090614
