I need the ability to leave IMAP-messages unread even if I already read them.
We have a centralized mail-database. In some folders the mails must stay unread.

what if, when in mailnews, you use the column picker on the far right of your
message list. There's a little icon at the end of the SUBJECT - SENDER - DATE
etc list. Select READ, and click the messages you want to mark as unread?

Does that work?

In that case the functionality you are looking for is in there and this bug
should be considered as a request for implementing extra UI in the form of MARK
MESSASE AS UNREAD in both the context menu and MESSAGE - MARK toolbar
[and the summary should be rewritten accordingly]

No. It does not work for me because I don't want to click to often, you know?
I did it that way the last month...

I open the IMAP-folder and read one new mail. This mail is now marked read.
But it should stay on status unread. And this should be adjustable for at least
any single account.

Would it not be logical to add Read and Un-Read to the label list ?
Then you could make multiple selections.

As for not marking it as read at all this should be in preference as mark mail
as read :

After X seconds
Only when you double click
Or Never

Malcolm, that is exactly what I would like to have in that preferences-menu.

But the "Mark As" should not be in the context-submenu "Label" because of easy
and quick handling. It should have an own entry or better two entries like
Outlook has. Maybe that could depend on the setting for showing the read-status
in that message list.
