Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.2) Gecko/20021216 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.2) Gecko/20021216 I always pull down the bottom separator between the message list pane and the preview pane all the way to the bottom so as to avoid previewing (reading) any messages until I select one to read. But this position does not stick (as it did in Netscape 4.x and previous). Every time the message/news front end opens, either upon starting Mozilla, selecting and double-clicking a folder or clicking the "Mail & Newsgroups" icon at the bottom of the browser window, a preview pane is made visible at the bottom with at least one-lines height. This happene no matter what the window settings in preferences are set for window arrangement. It makes it very inconvinent pull down the separator to the bottom again, and then immediately re-mark the message as unread, every time the window opens. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. With a list of messages displayed in the list pane, pull down the separator between that pane and the preview pane all the way to the bottom, so that the little arrows are pointing up. 2. Double click on any message to open it in separate window (just to do something). 3. Now either double click on another folder; or exit the mail&news reader and reenter it. Actual Results: You will see that the bottom preview pane now display's at least one line of the message, and that it is no longer on the bottom, and the little arrows are pointing down. Expected Results: As in Netscape 3.x and 4.x, when the bottom separator has been pulled to the bottom, it should stick there. Anytime a new front-end window opens, the bottom separator should still be on the bottom with the little arrows pointing up, and no messages are previewed or turned to "read". Workaround: Just continue to pull the bottom separator to the bottom until the little arrows point up, each time the mail&news front-end opens. Then immediatly click on the just-previewed message's read indicator to set it as unread again -- unless it really was a message already read, then leave the indicator alone. Or if you want to go ahead and read the message, ignore the indicator setting, and just double click on the message as normal.
Not seing this in current nightlies. Why not just close the pane all toghether?
Scott Hall, are you using the "alt 3-pane layout"? That is the layout where the message pane stretches across the full width of the window, with the folder and thread pane above it (rather than the folder pane taking the full height, with the thread and message panes to its right). If so, this sounds like bug 77447; if you agree, please mark this bug as a duplicate of that one.
