User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030406 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030406 Both roxy & quiksilver.com use document.layers and seem to have problems formatting the page correctly Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to either roxy or quiksilver.com (both use the same CMS and formatting scheme) 2. Go to any page other than the home page (product is a good example) Actual Results: Page formatting was broken, javascript console shows use of document.layers() (does NS 6/7 include these as an advantage over Mozilla, therefore causing the webmasters to ignore us?) Expected Results: Umm... annoy the webmaster for use of obsolete javascript api's Output from JavaScript console: Error: document.layers has no properties Source File: http://a2044.g.akamai.net/7/2044/1725/3ce19bb1edd507/www.roxy.com/includes/top_nav_NS_homepage.js Line: 9 Error: document.layers has no properties Source File: http://a2044.g.akamai.net/7/2044/1725/3ce19bb1edd507/www.roxy.com/includes/top_nav_NS_homepage.js Line: 26 Error: document.layers has no properties Source File: http://a2044.g.akamai.net/7/2044/1725/fada216477237c/www.roxy.com/includes/top_nav_NS.js Line: 9 Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... Summary: Page not rendered correctly; uses document.layers → roxy.com - Page not rendered correctly; uses document.layers
With Mozilla and/or Firebird being recommended at a lot of places, its time to turn up the heat a little. (read: "contact the webmaster"). Webmaster contacted - I will keep you posted. Assigning to Self

218215 is a possible dupe of this bug. This is a 4xp-like issue. They feed us <layer> because they assume: Mozilla/4.x without "compatible" (IE) and above -> use layer. \ I'll send them another letter soon

Depends on: 218215
you meant 218285. Evang bugs for different sites are not dupes even if the underlying problems are the same.
No longer depends on: 218215
Sorry. Sometimes tabbed browsing can really fool me... Its definitely shoddy server side browser sniffing. look at http://web.archive.org/web/20030219075051/http://www.roxy.com/ Letter sent to webmaster@quiksilver.com (both sites have same webmaster contact). Here is a copy. Dear Webmaster, I am writing to you regarding Mozilla Technology Evangelism Bugs 202696 and 218285 ( http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202696 & http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218285 ), concerning defective browser sniffing pratices on roxy.com and quiksilver.com respectively. Your website is set up to feed web browsers pages using deprecated <layer> tags, except in the presence of a Microsoft Internet Explorer User Agent (Mozilla/4.0 {compatible; MS IE 6.0}) Browsers affected include: - Mozilla (all versions) - Netscape (6.0 up. Netscape 6.0 and later do not use the same rendering engine as 4.x) - AOL & Compuserve for Mac OS X - Konqueror (Unix platforms) - Safari (Mac OS X) While such browsers don't have a lot of market share, you are strongly encoraged to write web pages complying to web standards, such as: - HTML 4.0 and/or XHTML 1.0. http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1 - Cascading Style Sheets, Level 2. http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2 - Document Object Model. http://www.w3.org/DOM/ Netscape DevEdge ( http://devedge.netscape.com ) contains valuable resources on this topic. Example sites include news.com, wired.com and espn.com Thanks, Mathew McBride
Dropping non-responsive since I sent the letter.

May the force fear the return of the [non-reponsive] tag!
Whiteboard: [non-responsive] See also 218285.
diff between Mozilla with IE user agent and Mozilla with normal useragent confirms use of layers still non-responsive :(
I guess the following reported error is bug 189950 !? { Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Invalid ClassID or ContractID" nsresult: "0x80570017 (NS_ERROR_XPC_BAD_CID)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://inspector/content/jsutil/system/file.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 121" data: no] }
Page was redesigned. [closeme]
