User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.1) Opera 7.01 [en]
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0
I've just installed Mozilla 1.3 on XP, but no matter what I do I get a
"Connection was refused" message from every web site. I use Mozilla 1.3 on my
Suse 8.1 partition with no problems, and I wanted to use it in XP too. I can
still use IE, Opera, cvs, ssh etc without any problems under XP.
I have a Gentoo box which does NAT / proxy / firewalling in between myself and
the Internet. It's possible to use any browser with the proxy or direct, either
works (with everything except Mozilla 1.3), the proxy just improves the speed
(Squid cache). If I configure Mozilla 1.3 with the proxy settings, I get 'The
proxy refused the connection' instead.
Since every other IP-related tool works perfectly under XP, either direct or via
the proxy, and Mozilla 1.3 worked fine in both configurations under Linux too, I
believe this is a Mozilla 1.3 Win32 problem.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Mozilla
2. Any page will do
3.
Actual Results:
"The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.mozilla.org"
Expected Results:
Displayed the page

Reporter, did you install Mozilla on top of an older version ? If you did, this
might explain this problem. You should always remove the old version first, or
install into a clean directory (your profile is safe).

No, I did not install Mozilla on top of a previous version under XP. I have only
run Mozilla on Linux up until now.
I do not have a firewall installed on this machine, but I am going via a
dedicated firewall box. However, as I stated every other application works
perfectly from this box under XP, including all other browsers and any IP tools,
and if I reboot it into Linux and fire up Mozilla 1.3 on that, it works fine
too. The only application that does not work is Mozilla under XP.

And you are sure that you didn't enabled the XP build-in Firewall ?
If you open Mozilla and run "netstat" in a cmd-window, do you see 2 loopback
connections ?
example (sorry for the german) :
Proto Lokale Adresse Remoteadresse Status
TCP Matti:1037 Matti:1038 HERGESTELLT
TCP Matti:1038 Matti:1037 HERGESTELLT

Apologies, I've just figured out what it is. Although this box no longer has a
personal firewall on it, the ZoneAlarm TrueVector dlls were still installed
which even though ZoneAlarm wasn't being used anymore must have been
intercepting some traffic. I have no idea why it only intercepted Mozilla out of
all the other browsers & tools I use on this machine. I got suspicious when I
couldn't ping the box from the firewall machine even though everything else
worked (except for Mozilla). Removing the dlls sorted it out.
I'm very sorry for wasting your time.
