Opening several pages from http://www.statesman.com/ in tabs shows that this is slowing down Mozilla a lot. Mozilla 1.4 trunk 2003042904 on Windows 98 tested.
I can't reproduce this on current builds, such as Mozilla 1.4 beta. Closing.
