Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 4.0)
Build Identifier: Mozilla 1.3 (latest)
Tried to upgrade to latest version of Mozilla and I get a error after rebooting
saying A prevous attempt to install has not completed installing and I need to
reboot. After several reboots, I keep getting the same error message. It fails
to load even after all this. Insult to injury when I do a full UNINSTALL,
reboot to be safe, and then install again.... It tells me a previous attempt
to install did not complete, please reboot.
After MULTIPLE reboots.... Same error.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install
2.Reboot
3.Error
Actual Results:
Error
Expected Results:
Allow for a install or UPGRADE install... Or if installing it would, well,
install. I know of no logical reason this occurs, maybe I am the only, as I
have read the error pages. .... Also if One could BACK UP the e-mail history
it would be great just incase a FULL OS REINSTALL is needed.

I have Windows ME, not the same as before.
I did not have 1.3a before hand. I had 1.2.

After MULTIPLE install attempts, it continues with error.
Spend all day Friday with this method. Reboot after reboot.
After Multiple Installs and complete UNinstalls and reboot after reboot (full
power down if you need to know) it continues.
I had 1.2 before and was upgrading to full 1.3.
Last time I had this problem, 1.2 to 1.3a I had to FDISK the computer and fully
install the program back to 1.2. I refused to do any beta's because of this
and waited till 1.3 was "final" then installed.
This is more then limited to 1.3a to 1.3, as this is not the same.
Maybe you feel it is similar. But considering the history on 197164, it looks
and feels different.
Infact I could find no solution other then complete OS install. Bad plan.

Kevin,
What build are you upgrading to? If you continue to get the 'Program must
complete ...' error message, go to installation directory and remove
xpicleanup.dat and also check task manager to see if any mozilla.exe or
xpicleanup.exe processes are running- that is workaround for an upgrade install
experiencing the original bug.
the original bug was that mozilla.exe was not getting closed down during an
install (or uninstall!) (bug 190816) and so on a clean install users would see a
restart message. Users who were upgrading- would see the message you are
getting- as in both cases some files are in use. On upgrade installs - where
files are replaced- xpicleanup 'should start' when mozilla.exe closes - and
remove old files -that have been replaced with new- this cannot happen since
mozilla.exe is still hanging around. the fix to bug 190816 prompts user to quit
mozilla- and/or forcibly quits it before starting the install.
I am not sure what state your mozilla is in at this point- but installing or
upgrading to a recent nightly should fix the problem.
You should not have to reboot
also email, bookmarks etc are stored separately from the application and should
nto be affected by installs, upgrades or uninstalls. That being said, profile
manager has issues also :(
Please try and let us know how it goes
kevin, please provide us with the exact strings in the error/warning dialogs
that you encounter. From what you mention in the bug, it doesn't sound like
mozilla or it's installer is throwing up the error dialogs. But it's hard to
tell without the exact message.

It is MOZILLA, it was version 1.2 to the latest 1.3. The error message is
similar to what was going on with error 1.3a to 1.3b, but I was not doing beta.
I did have all steps in previous fix, it will not work.
I believe it is related, but it is definately NOT a beta issue.
Right now I am SO **** I am reinstalling the OS AGAIN!!!!!
I want a functioning browser and pop mail account that at least is easy to back
up. Since I have NO IDEA where the files are I lost all my e-mail.
This is real pathetic. Closing a problem before asking if it is.
I would never see a doctor ask my neighbor if the premier of Russia is
healthy. I would expect the doctor to ask the patient and ask directly. There
has to be a better trouble shooting method then this.
All this closing leave the problem really open, w/o verifying with the
patient!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the problem did exist in the 1.2 -> 1.3 time frame- it was fixed in 1.4 time
frame so if you try a recent nightly, you should be successful.
also installing into a clean directory (which is suggested in the release notes)
should also help for a successful installation.
please let us know what occurs

Kevin,
We can't help you if there's not enough information on what's going on. Right
now, we need some more info:
* What is the exact error message(s) that you saw? The error message,
"previous attempt to install did not complete, please reboot", is not something
the installer or the mozilla browser has. Is this the *exact* string that you saw?
* At which point did you see this error message?
ie.
1) ran mozilla installer
2) clicked thru all the dialogs
3) saw the download progress dialog
4) saw the file copy progress dialog
5) mozilla started up (saw the mozilla banner)
5) error message showed up
or
1) ran mozilla installer
2) clicked thru all the dialogs
3) saw the download progress dialog
4) saw the file copy progress dialog
5) installer asked me to reboot the system
6) after system reboot, saw the error message double clicking on the
mozilla desktop icon.
I resolved this bug because I thought it was similar to bug 197164. It is
customary to resolve bugs when it is fixed, so people can then verify *afterwards*.
However, you need to verify that this bug has been resolved by trying the latest
builds. We can't fix this problem in the old builds because they have already
been released. We can only fix problems in the latest builds. If you
can't/don't try the latest builds, then this bug will never be resolved for you.
