User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; MSOCD; Q312461) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312 Every time I first get mail messages after a reboot, there's a _long_ delay with the message "building summary file for Inbox" at the bottom. I had maybe 200-300 messages in Inbox; I tried moving them all to a new folder, it still does the same thing (with 0 messages in Inbox). It doesn't matter whether I've accessed the internet prior to using mail. This started happening recently, after I'd been using Mozilla mail without problems for a couple of months, and I'm not aware of having changed anything except possibly deleted a few older messages from Inbox right before it started doing this (not sure about this though, problem might have started before I deleted the messages). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
See bug 172786 comment #29 why the summary file might be rebuilt so often. It's normally only supposed to do that when the file is missing, corrupt or when an external program has modified the file behind Mozilla's back. PS: A few hours ago, a patch for that same bug 172786 was checked in, that should speed up the building of this summary file.
How big is your INBOX file? Have you ever done a compact folder on your inbox? Now, as to why your INBOX is always getting reparsed, if it's happening every time you reboot, something funny is going on. Does it happen for other folders besides your INBOX?
The Inbox file is (was) about 16 meg. Yes I did try doing a compact folder to see if that would fix it but it didn't. It doesn't happen with any other folders (but I've never had many messages in other folders). Since I'd moved all messages out of Inbox to another folder, I tried deleting the Inbox and Inbox.msf files, and this "fixed" it. I should note that the Inbox file was still 16 meg even though I'd moved all messages out of the Inbox folder, which seems like a bug, and is presumably why the "building summary file" problem was still there until I deleted the file(s). I am not aware of any other program on my system that would be touching the Mozilla mail files.
your inbox must have been corrupted in such a way that we couldn't even compact it. If you've deleted it, then we can't tell how it was corrupted.
somehow your files got corrupted
