208759 - Mail thread suddenly starts scrolling endlessly

I have seen this happen several times in the past month or so
but I have not been able to determine the cause of this problem.
I'm filing this bug to see if others are seeing it also.

Bug Description:

1. I am reading new messages on my IMAP account. (3-pane mode)
2. I either use "N" key to read one new msg after another.
3. This problem seems to happen suddenly when I press "N"
   key to read the next new msg -- usually after I have gone
   through a number of msgs this way already. 
4. The thread pane lists all the messages I have. (usually about 2000),
   and when this problem occurs, it starts scrolling down automatically
   and endlessly. The message displayed in the bottom view pane does not
   change, but the thread is scrolling by so that you can't select
   a msg easily. You can stop it usually by dragging the display to the
   very top or the very bottom of the message list. 
   But the momentyou go anywhere else (by scrolling some), the
   auto scrolling begins again.

Note: This problem seems to happen often when I am clicking and choosing
      a new message to read from one location and then choosing
      another message which is a number of msgs away from the previous one
      selected. Once this problem begins, it simply doesn't stop -- it keeps
      on scrolling endelessly unitl the Mail window is closed or the thread
     list is returned to the top or the bottom.

I think we should at least investigate why this occurs and if it is
a 1.4 stopper. If it occurs under a normal scenario, it should be 
fixed before 1.4 goes out. Let's pin down the condition that initiates 
the auto scrolling as soon as possible.

I have been seeing this too for quite a while.  It is very annoying and used to
cause my system to crash.  I haven't seen the crash lately but I am careful not
to put mail in this state anymore. 

some additional info:
- this happens in both mail and in newsgroups.
- You can get the scrolling to stop by swithing mail folders or double clicking
on a message as it is scrolling by.
- another way to reproduce this is to go to the bottom of a list of messages,
click on a mail message while holding the left mouse key down and drag the
message upwards a bit.  I think this is how I initially saw this happening ...
by trying to select a message but accidentally dragging a little bit.
