User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030522 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 1.4 Release Candidate 1 (9 June, 2003) Running Mozilla 1.4 RC1 on my 1GB Alpha, it continuously expands virtual memory, consuming all freemem and filling the modified list (appearing in various resource wait for page states) until a hang occurs. OVMS note: V7.3 system is patched up to date. OPL at V1.0-0A5, GTK at V1.2-10. Seems to behave in a classic malloc() error fashion. I appreciate the agent ID is not correct, but I cannot run Mozilla to determine the value. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Click on Mozilla icon installed in Motif applications menu 2. Wait... 3. Oops. Actual Results: system hung waiting for RWMPB on Mozilla (my pagefile is too small for misbehaving processes). Expected Results: Behave and open a browser window. Please contact me for OpenVMS specific configuration information.

I'm afraid you're going to have to try running Mozilla (and risk wedging the system again) in order to try and track this one down. You might want to reduce your page file quota, or increase the size of your page file!!! First thing, locate the file xul.mfasl in your user profile tree (in the _MOZILLA directory in your SYS$LOGIN) and delete it. Try running Mozilla. If that doesn't help, try creating and running a new profile. Use the -profilemanager switch on the mozilla command line to bring up the Profile Manager, create yourself a test profile, and use it. Report back with the results!
Data reported as additional comment 2 _was_ a new profile in a brand new user directory. I will crank down quotas and try it again after production (my users tend to be a bit cranky if annual downtime on any node including a test system exceeds .05%).
You should do something about the page file quota/size mismatch. The way you have things now someone just has to write a program to malloc() a huge chunk and your system hangs? Not good.
Regarding comment 5, this has been corrected. It has been a long time since we've had a program which behaves in this way. Perhaps FORTRAN has insulated us from this issue. In general, our programmers average 25 years experience. Hard to believe, but gross errors are rare, which is good considering the sensitive nature of the "technical" application.

OK, so why is this problem occurring for you, but no one else? What's different about your environment? You say you created a new profile so its not a corrupt profile. Which version of Mozilla were you running before installing 1.4-RC1? I presume you had no trouble running that version.

It might be worth while removing C1.4 (and OPL) and reinstalling A1.3 to confirm that that still works fine. And then install C1.4 again. This is very strange. I'm kind of at a loss for things to suggest!

I just tried "rolling back" through the installations of Mozilla available. C1.4 & B1.4 behave like 1.4RC1. A1.4 exits with out an error message before creating a panel; $STATUS is %X1003001. Reinstalled OPL 1.0-0A4. Still crashes Mozilla in PTHREADRTL. The last modification to this component was PTHREAD 0300, installed 15 August 2002, I have no idea why a thread is an issue. I know MUTEX functions were deedled in UPDATE 0100 which broke some of our threaded code, but this patch has been in for even longer. The only recent patch with systemwide scope was XFC 0300.
The only value in the frame pointing to system space (and therefore installation dependent) is FFFFFFFF.802573F4, which is IMAGE_MANAGEMENT+0F3F4 (IMAGE_MANAGEMENT ends at FFFFFFFF.80257C00).
Let me see if I have this straight. You are now back to A1.3 with OPL 1.0-0A4, which was your original working configuration, and now that's failing? Something's screwy here. Have you been INSTALLing any of the images?
I have been installing using '@SYS$COMMON:[MOZILLA]INSTALL' after installing each release. I also '@SYS$COMMON:[MOZILLA]INSTALL REMOVE' before installing the package. I did not perform any special memory or library installation steps for GTK or OPL. I also want to mention that I realize the program failure (as defined by the traceback dump) was in Mozilla. The existance of a Pthread entry on the frame is evidence of a threaded program, but only that. It may not be the problem, but we are sensitive to it because of problems brought on by patches earlier last year.
The problem almost looks like its finding the wrong sharables, maybe the wrong libxpcom. Can you @[MOZILLA]INSTALL REMOVE and the (the real) INSTALL LIST to make sure that the images really are gone. And then run MOZILLA without installing anything.
@SYS$COMMON:[MOZILLA]INSTALL REMOVE left no INSTALL LIST'ed components with "MOZ" in the filename or directory string. @SYS$COMMON:[MOZILLA]MOZILLA.COM without installed images produced the same result.
For reference, I cycled GTK$SHUTDOWN and GTK$STARTUP and OPL$SHUTDOWN and OPL$STARTUP (as well as Mozilla's INSTALL REMOVE and INSTALL) without making any difference in behavior.
$ define VMS_TRACE_FILENAMES 1 Then run Mozilla. The output will probably be long. Either attach it to this bug report or mail it to me directly. Maybe that'll give a clue.
Your log showed that the problem occured after the dlsym() of NSGetModule from libwebbrwsr.so, but before the dlopen() of libappcomps. It would be interesting if you could repeat that test a few times to see if the problem always occurs immediately following the dlsym from libwebbrwsr.so. But what I don't understand is why the A1.3 version is now failing. This is the part that doesn't make any sense. Unless its because you've changed the virtual memory settings? Anyway, we've established that the problem is not specific to 1.4-RC1, and so it would appear that there's something about your system which is upsetting Mozilla. I think it would be useful if you could post (or mail me) your account details from AUTHORIZE. Another thing you can try is to disable upcalls in the Mozilla image (Mozilla won't work too well with upcalls disabled but in my limited testing it will at least come up). I'm just a little cautious about the threading environment, and turning off upcalls may affect things just enough that we see a different behaviour. $ set default sys$common:[mozilla] $ rename mozilla-bin.; mozilla-bin.exe; $ threadcp /disable=up mozilla-bin $ rename mozilla-bin.exe; mozilla-bin.; $ define VMS_TRACE_FILENAMES 1 $ @mozilla /out=log.log about:blank Check the log file to see if it failed in the same place. Use THREADCP /ENABLE=UP to restore upcalls to the Mozilla image (you'll need to do the rename trick again).

Have run Mozilla from several different user profiles with different quotas. The result is always as the original (looking for NSGetModule in libwebbrwsr.so; same reason mask, same virtual address, same program counter, same processor status). Since comment 13 I have been testing against Mozilla C1.4, OPL V1.0-0A5 & GTK V1.2-10 (i.e., the current release candidate and supporting port lib). After reviewing the content of OPL's .PCSI file, I "$ INSTALL REPLACE"'d the image SYS$SHARE:VMS_JACKETS.EXE on the chance it was replaced by installation, but no joy.
Can you post (or mail me) the AUTHORIZE info and THREADCP results? Do you have any other systems on which you are running (or can install) Mozilla? Is there any chance I could get telnet access to this system?

Now we're getting somewhere. That stack trace is the same (at least the top is) as bug 174309 (and bug 173311). The problem there was a buggy plugin. So, can you try deleting all the plugins you have in SYS$COMMON:[MOZILLA.PLUGINS], leaving just the default LIBNULLPLUGIN.SO and see if that makes things work. If it does then work, put the plugins back, one at time, until we find the culprit.
Removed all plugins except for LIBNULLPLUGIN.SO. Mozilla 1.4RC1 executed. As a diagnostic, I moved the plugins back one at a time, trying Mozilla after each step. Perversely, now the plugins are all back in the directory AND Mozilla functions. I would be interested in knowing what internal data structure was corrupted and caused this week of wierdness. By the way, your PGFLQUOTA is nowhere near enough for using the Java plugin. Java alone requires at least 2,000,000 pages according to their release notes.
Thanks for the comment. As you will recall from earlier in the exercise, the application was running away and stealing all the pages in a too-small pagefile. The pagefile was extended to avoid the problem of an ill-mannered process hanging the system, and the TEST profile was created to allow me to experiment with PGFLQUO. TEST is not a representative profile. I did not adjust it's PGFLQUO to a larger value because starting with a smaller one and working up to the current value made no difference on the outcome. On this system AGEN$FEEDBACK.DAT has reported no pagefile usage (PAGEFILE1_PEAK = 0) for several years. Our application is very static in memory use, but very CPU intense.
we scan plugins based on timestamp. posibly ~/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat was currupt.
This problem seems to be covered by bug 211480, therefore I'm closing this one. If I'm wrong and there's a different problem here to fix, feel free to re-open.
