It is not possible to select "View -> Sort by -> Thread".  This option is grayed
all the time (not available for selection).  The bug is present in both mail
folders and news groups.

Aleksandar Milivojevic, the symptom you describe occurs when you have a MailView 
selected (something other than "All" in the dropdown box above the thread pane).

Threading is not available when a MailView (or QuickSearch) is active.  If that 
is your problem, this bug is a duplicate of bug 135326.

If bug 135326 is introduced in 1.4 (since in 1.3 everything worked just fine),
than this might be a duplicate, as you sugested.  I have experimented a little
bit, and found out that I'm able to get old behaviour (only unread messages,
sorted by thread) if I select all in "View->Messages" and unread (or threads
with unread) in "View->Threads".

I see the problem now.  In 1.3, View|Messages was a separate setting from the 
MailView dropdown; and when a View|Messages item (other than All, and other than 
the Thread items) was selected, you could still View | Sort by | Thread (or 
click the Thread column header).

Now, View|Messages is directly mapped to the MailView (and the Thread items have 
been moved to a separate View|Threads submenu) -- this apparently from fixing 
bug 187990.  This does make for a more consistent UI; however:

Selecting something other than All from View | Messages is the same as selecting 
a mailview (and functionally equivalent to a Quick Search) and so threading is 
no longer possible, due to bug 135326.

To get the same net effect as before, select   View | Threads | Unread
or   View | Threads| Threads with Unread

I'm confirming and adding 'regression' just so it doesn't float unaddressed, but 
I doubt the old behavior is going to come back.  Getting 135326 fixed is the 
best bet.

Well, I guess you are right. And since the desired effect can be reached by some
other means as you described in the other bug, we can say that Sort by/Thread is
intentionally made like it is now. So there is no regression in functionality.

Technically, this qualifies the bug as invalid.
