Build ID: 1999120608, others Platform: Win32 To reproduce: - Download the XPInstaller for Mozilla (seamonkey32e.exe) - Install Mozilla Result: Eventually, the application is launched. This is bad. It's getting in the way of my daily performance testing, and (I believe) it's bad for to automatically launch the application you're installing. Other installers give you the option to launch it or not.

Component: XPInstall → Install Wizard

Changing component to Install Wizard. I'm tempted to close this as INVALID since this is what we were told to do, but I'll leave it open for you to make your case to marketing and the profile migration folks who wanted to hide all the slow startup stuff in the install process.
Thanks for fixing the component. My case is simple: - Because the installer currently launches the application, I can't perform meaningful benchmarking on daily builds. - It's in bad taste to launch an application as part of an installer without asking the user for explicit permission to do so. This is especially true of applications which assume that a network connection will be present or started upon launch. That's all I have to say about this.

adding kevin yen to the cc list.
For debugging/development purposes, there should be an easy to way to turn it off. For Beta1, the autostart is important. Bullets are: - hides the migration into the installation instead of first startup time - necessary for Activation (setup integrated Registration) For post-Beta1, we'll have to think more about the online/offline handling. thx, kevin

A command-line parameter should be simple enough (on windows). Reassigning to Sean and marking M13 If you need this on the Mac also please write up another bug, because this solution obviously won't work there (plus they're two separate programs anyways so may not get fixed at the same time).

Related: Stop making me migrate my 200MB Netscape 4.X profile every time I do a clean install of Mozilla. I don't want my profile migrated. Why no choice?

Adding Selmer to cc list. Jerry, you should open up a new bug with [RFE] in the summary (request for feature enhancement). You're point, while valid, actually covers a different area of the code.

The install itself runs a large part of mozilla to install the files in the first place. You'll just have to reboot your machine to get valid benchmark data in these cases.

Rebooting the machine provides inaccurate benchmark data as the startup time is different on Mac OS and Linux (those two platforms do not launch the executable on installation). Are you absolutely sure there is no way to write an installer that doesn't launch the application? This is in very poor form. I'll verify this as WONTFIX for now but... this solution leaves a LOT to be desired.

Benchmarking schmenchmarking, but *visibly* starting the app without asking is just bad manners. Run as much of it as you like during the install process, but don't open any windows unless the user explicitly wants you to.
