User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624 Mozilla is putting files in my C:\TEMP\ directory, then opening them in a new window that doesn't display any content. This happens repeatedly with Flash .swf files, and sporadically with html files while surfing the web. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Save a swf file to your hard drive. 2. Double-click on the file to launch it in Mozilla. 3. Actual Results: Opens an infinite number of windows of the form: C:\TEMP\filename.swf-1-1-1...-1-1.spl Expected Results: Launch Flash app. A very similar error sometimes happens while I'm surfing the web. A new window spontaneously opens, with a URL like C:\TEMP\index.html or C:\TEMP\search.html, etc. The new window usually has no content, or else something very short, like "File has been moved to ...." This happens sporadically. I often have multiple windows open, and sometimes select links with right-click Open in New Window. I don't know whether that has anything to do with it.

biesi, fixing the stuff you are fixing now would help with this somewhat (make the extension thing not suck as much, at least). Could you mark this dependent on that bug?

FYI, I'm having a ton of problems with http://www.anandtech.com/ today. It seems like every time I click on a link on that site, a spurious browser window pops up with a C:\TEMP\... URL and no content. I don't know if this will be reliably repeatable or if it's just the phase of the moon today.
I think the problem with bogus windows opening has something to do with the fact that I'm browsing through a proxy on our corporate network. I had thought the trouble started when I upgraded to Moz 1.4, but I just went back to 1.3, and the problem persists. I think my original upgrade to 1.4 happened about the same time we switched to a different network setup. The problem does not happen over my dial-up connection at home. I deleted all of the helper app types in my preferences, including "unknown", and now *sometimes* when I click on a hyperlink, I get a dialog box asking what I want to do with a file of type unknown. But if I cancel and click the same link again, it often works just fine. I don't think this problem is affected by the content of the page; I think it's some intermittent problem with the browser's interface to the proxy. For example, I was at http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_enclosures.html and clicked on "Solution Series" to go to http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_en_solution.html. I got a dialog box that said: The file "pro_en_solution.html" is of type unknown, and Mozilla does not know how to handle this file type. This file is located at: http://www.antec-inc.com/ What should Mozilla do with this file? Open it with the default application (MozillaHTML) I clicked OK, and got a new browser window with the URL file:///C:/TEMP/pro_en_solution.html. The source code of this file was: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN"> <html><head> <title>302 Found</title> </head><body> <h1>Found</h1> The document has moved <a HREF="http://content.bizrate.com/locator/toms_ad.xpml?rf=tom012">here</a>.<p> </body></html> I tried the hyperlink again, and it worked fine.

I think the problem with spurious windows spontaneously opening with TEMP content went away when I upgraded my copy of Proxomitron (local proxy that filters ads and stuff: http://www.proxomitron.info/). However, I may have tweaked some of its settings at the same time, so I don't know whether it was a configuration issue or a bug in an older version of Proxomitron. I still think it also had something to do with the fact that I'm going through a corporate firewall proxy, because I used the same Proxomitron setup with my dialup at home, and never experienced the problem there. I'm still getting the problem with swf files launching an infinite number of browser windows.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01". This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code. While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug (given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more reproduction information if you have it. If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved. Thank you for your help in this matter.
