Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win95; en-US; rv:1.4b) Gecko/20030516 Mozilla Firebird/0.6

At the first start of Firebird on an Win95-Notebook no proper OLEAUT32.DLL was
found. After I copied the 'new' Version of Win98 SE, everything worked well.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.unzipping MozillaFirebird-0.6-win32.zip
2. executing MozillaFirebird.exe with/without argument '-p'
3. error message about missing OLEAUT32.DLL:77

Actual Results:
see point 3

Christoph, your build is already rather old (over two month) and a lot has
happened since then regarding firebird development.

Please download a current nightly build and test this again using a fresh
profile without additional themes and extensions. Thank you.
Severity: minor → critical
OS: other → Windows 95
Please see bug 197692 and the recent builds that I used which still displayed
the exact error message that Christoph reported. Comment 30 of that bug seems to
prove that Mozilla/Firebird is dependent an updated OLEAUT32.DLL in Windows, or
it wont be able to launch. The OLEAUT32.DLL that shipped on the CD with Windows
95 and Windows 98 (first edition) seems to be insufficient.
There's no doubt about MFB needs the OLEAUT32.dll - the problem is just the
following: at least on my machine OLEAUT32.dll is locked by the system right
after booting of windows. Hence a simple ZIP-archive is not allowed to overwrite
an already existing and locked oleaut32.dll and since MFB doesn't have an
"official" installer, there's obviously not much left we can do about this - at
least for the moment.

Searching bugzilla for missing DLLs filed against SeaMonkey shows, that we
obviously use to update system.dll's to the required versions or if missing, but
only when using the installer.
Bug #214263 is a tracking bug for the implemetation of a generic Windows
installer for Firebird and Thunderbird -> Simon, should we link both bugs
through dependencies or won't that be necessary?
I think it's a good idea to let bug 214263 block this bug. I'm confirming this
BTW and taking QA Contact.

197692 is the same bug on Moz, same timeframe, same error, duping accordingly
