I can reproduce that. Same thing happens on djst's weblog -

Not seeing it (2003090304/w32).
Do you both have mouse gestures installed? I don't.

I don't have any extensions installed.
I see it on both http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/djst/ and
http://lan.macelodeon.de/ , but you need to wait for page to load entirely (it's
related to page background).

Reproduced on 1.5b (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5b)
Gecko/20030827) but only on the referenced URL... not on Djst's nest.. The
background bug on Djst's nest, I believe is Bug #57607.
I'm seeing CPU usage rise to about 27%-60% and Memory use of Mozilla jumped from
about 29,000k to 37,004k loading that page. CPU usage spikes when you point at
any of the links on the right. heh..
I don't have Mouse Gestures installed.

Something that might be related - do you have smooth scrolling on? I do, and I
can see stuttering on djst's page after background is loaded. I am not talking
about background not loading, I am talking about page display stuttering when
scrolling.
I think it has something to do with translucency.
