In the "Make 1.5 more user-friendly" newsgroup discussion, it was suggested that
we change the default visibility of the Stop button in Mail/News to visible.

"> Why does Mail and News need a Stop button?

For example if smb send me mail with 3mb attachment. I prefer to cancel this
download (Mozilla by default start to download this) and check it via webmail"

I agree. The user should always be able to cancel any action if he wants to.
Other reasons: There is enough free space on the toolbar, and the user already
knows that button from the Navigator.

one of the reasons we hide stop by default is that, with junk, we started to run
out of room.

so this is a UI decision.  

david, what do you think about adding stop back?

There is plenty of room on the toolbar at 800x600... But the button is broken in
some cases, therefore it may be better to hide it.

The button is broken? Is that to say that the stop button doesn't stop activity?
I've seen that in both mail and browser windows. The loop that carries out
getting or sending data in those windows should include a test for the stop button.

Why? It's among the first things I set when installing as a replacement for Outlook/Outlook Express on every system I install it on.

Because with both computers and internet connections getting faster, the number of instances where you might need such a button has been steadily dropping. So  much so that I no longer think it requires primary UI.

But if you disagree, feel free to reopen this bug and take ownership of it (metaphorically speaking).

I don't think connection speed is relevant. Yet, there are still many people stuck with POTS for reasons outside their control. A UI without a stop button is a lot like a keyboard with no working ESC key.

Thunderbird currently has the Stop button by default (I think; I may have reconfigured my toolbar). Not sure what SeaMonkey does.

I just tested with a newly created profile (seamonkey -no-remote -ProfileManager -mail), and I found the "Stop" button in the palette (the reserve of buttons available but not currently present on any toolbar). In my usual "default" profile the Stop button is on the main toolbar.

P.S. In the browser, the Stop button is present by default on a toolbar.
