In the "Make 1.5 more user-friendly" newsgroup discussion, it was suggested that
we make the default bookmarks more user-oriented.

"The firebird guys did his to a certain extent. Their default bookmarks
contain links to the Plug-in FAQ at mozdev.org and a link to the
mozillazine newbie forum for example."

Daniel: thanks for a good starting list. I think that in the case of default
bookmarks, less is certainly more. We also need to remember that we are catering
for an international audience.

So, I'd say we shouldn't have the News, References, Entertainment, Business, or
Technology categories at all.

I think Plug-ins and Extensions should be at the top level.

Some of the other URLs are not things end users would be particularly interested
in. I like the idea of privacy/security links, but wasn't too impressed with the
BBB one.

Here's my interim suggestions, then:

LXR isn't up to speed on the latest check-in yet, but here are some nits from
just looking at attachment 131405 [details]:

- mozilla.org is mentioned twice (under Mozilla community and under Mozilla project)

- unless we're really into giving Google free advertising (it's great and all,
but...), it'd be nice to include just a couple of other search engines.

- mozdev is an important site that could be in the default bookmarks

- some popular extensions (e.g., calendar, alternative themes) could be in the
default bookmarks

- Ben Goodger once made a great page of killer Mozilla features that could be in
the default bookmarks

Although it might not seem that way, I fully endorse the less-is-more approach. :)

Extensions is addressed by the link to the superb extensionroom.mozdev.org .
Themes is partly addressed by the default start-up page of 1.4.1.

Do we need link to mozdev.org? The aim of this bug is to make default bookmarks
more user-friendly, and I think extensionroom is much more user friendly then
mozdev.org is

Yes. I don't think this is necessarily a problem.

Which ones? You could use this argument ad infinitum. Google is clearly superior
at the moment, so we put it in.

> - mozdev is an important site that could be in the default bookmarks

We are trying to make them more user-oriented. extensionroom and plugindoc are
the two mozdev places which IMO are appropriate to include.

We could do with some sort of tour, perhaps. But it needs writing :-)

This is only a problem if you're really into the whole "less is more"
perspective, which is, of course, easy to take to the extreme. So it's not
really a problem. Is the lack of capitalization of mozilla.org in the bookmark
title (i.e., not the URL) intentional? Perhaps "Mozilla Foundation" is a more
appropriate title.

Well, it's cleary superior according to conventional wisdom, which is fairly
behind the times. There are other interesting search engines, at least in terms
of the research behind them, e.g., vivisimo.com, teoma.com, wisenut.com. In
terms of coverage, alltheweb.com's 3,151,743,117 index pages actually slightly
leads Google's 3,307,998,701 -- of course, they're not the same pages.
(netscape.com and aol.com might be appropriate, given the history of Mozilla,
but the search results on both of them are supplied by Google!) Granted, this is
an ad infinitum argument. (I suppose if one were trying to be really fair, the
proper thing to do would be to randomly place different search engines in the
Mozillas people downloaded, but that's clearly not desirable for technical
reasons.) Still, just one or two others -- any others -- would at least give a
semblance of fairness. Or perhaps Mozilla Foundation could use this as an excuse
to get some money from Google.

Damn it, I can't find that page of Goodgers. Or was it for Firebird, anyway?
