When does it crash, before showing any splash screen?
Does it show a message?
Or do you see a fully loaded browser, crashing?

Firebird:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/release-notes.html#install
If you delete your profile directory, and the program directory, and install
firebird into a fresh folder, there should be no problems.
Of course, you got to reinstall all the themes and extensions.
But as you have had problems, please test firebird first, before installing
anything, and then install extensions and themes, one-by-one, and testing after
each install.

Mozilla/Netscape:
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.4/
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.4/installation.html#win
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.4/known-issues.html#prefs
... Do not share a profile between Netscape and Mozilla nightly builds. Doing
this can lead to unpredictable results ...

I assume you did not start Mozilla and Netscape each with its own profile, as
you must do this from the commandline or edit the shortcut to include a profile
name.
Netscape profile folders and Mozilla profile folders are stored in the same
profile folder, the mozilla registry is used for both of them, so if you simply
start Mozilla, or Netscape, without specifying a profile, the last used profile
is used, not looking if it was a profile belonging to the other browser.

De-install Mozilla, backup the plugins folder if you don´t want to reinstall the
plugins, delete the program folder, install Mozilla, and CREATE A NEW profile at
the end of the installation. This won´t touch your mail, bookmarks, cookies,
passwords etc. stored in the old profile.
Test with the new profile, and if it works, you can test the old profile, or
migrate files from there to the new one. It is a bit tricky, as you have to
rename some files, but there is help on some other sites about doing this.
Ask at www.mozillazine.org in the appropriate forum.

Could you please report:
What you are seeing before and after the crash?
Does reinstalling into clean folder and a new profile help?
When does it crash, before showing any splash screen?
- the browser crashes after it shows the splash screen

Does it show a message?
- before it crases the browser asks me if I wnat to make it the primary browser

Or do you see a fully loaded browser, crashing?
- the browser fully loads and starts to open the netscape.com web-site but
crases in the process

-Re-installing to a new folder or new profile did not help the problem

Note:
- I never have different versions of the browser installed or running at the
same time, I always uninstall one version before installing another
