I'll use that message posted on the newsgroup netscape.public.mozilla.browser
(on the news.mozilla.org server) for the demonstration (both URI should work):

nntp://news.mozilla.org:119/[e-mail]
news:news.mozilla.org:119/[e-mail]

Clicking the link will show the article in the browser. 
My version of Mozilla (1.5) is not showing the characters in the original
coding. The message was sent on the newsgroup with the "iso-8859-1" character
coding (charset="iso-8859-1") to allow the word "für" to be written with the
umlaut on the "u". 
If I manualy do View/Character coding/Western (ISO-8859-1) the text is not
displayed correctly. It is only right if I chose View/Character coding/Unicode(
UTF-8).

Steps to Reproduce:



Expected Results:  
The browser should not change the original document and detect the charset
originaly used in the posted article.

I don't know how a iso 8859-1 charset has been tranformed to UTF-8. There is
probably a complex autodetect encoding task at work here.

Note also I have set Edit/Preferences/Navigator/Languages/Character
Coding/ISO-8859-1 as default character coding (to use on pages where no HTTP
header and no HTML meta info is provided) in the browser.
