When I try to write some message using the mail client included with Mozilla
1.5, I get the problem, because the cursor stys away from the real position and
many symbols are hidden on screen (but will show if the message is sent). That's
specially true for some non-latin characters and mail writing quickly becomes a
nightmare.

Reproducible: Always

I get the same problem. In fact it isn't just the message compose window but any
text input window(for example on html forms). I am running OS X 10.3.4 on a G5.
The caret seems not to accurately measure the end of the text line (while typing
a line the caret could appear on top of or even several characters before the
one actually being typed).

The problem is unaffected by the dpi setting in the preferences.
Ah, the problem only occurs on lines containing spaces.
It occurs with both 'variable' and 'fixed width' font settings.
