My latest mozilla restart revealed this configuration problem:
Part of my proxy settings are 'locked' so that i am unable to edit them.
All of these proxy-settings work and are changeable with mozilla-firebird
0.6.1-8 (debian/sid).

yuck, sorry i ovelooked the 'Use Preferences from System'-Option, switching it
off reverts back to full proxy-features. Perhaps 'The System will override
mozilla settings' should be written in big red letters. ;)
