The browser ignores the settings I made in preferences concerning cookies (e.g.
cookies disabled -> browser still accepts them, ask before saving -> browser
saves without asking), the only way to block/unblock cookies is by "Tools ->
Cookie Manager".

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Set settings for cookies in preference (e.g. ask before saving or disabled)
2.Access a site who sets cookies (e.g. ebay.com)
Actual Results:  
Mozilla ignores settings mad under preferences (e.g. cookies disabled -> browser
still accepts them, ask before saving -> browser saves without asking) but
doesn't if you block cookies by the cookie manager in "Tools"

Expected Results:  
!!!Act like the settings have been set!!!

The error occured while using an older Mozilla 1.4-Profile in Mozilla 1.5. Maybe
this doesn't occure if you create a new account in 1.5, but I think it is
necessary for newer versions to accept older accounts (what 1.5 did) but without
problems. Please excuse my (hopefully not) bad English!

Try clearing the cookie whitelist/blacklist:
Prefs >> Privacy & Security >> Manage Stored Cookies >> Cookie Sites >> Remove
All Sites

Also, how do you know the browser is accepting cookies?

I can regenerate this bug. Unchecking "Enable Cookies" in preference panel
doesn't work. Previous versions (up to 1.5 version) modified
'network.cookie.cookieBehavior' to 2, but current trunk version doesn't
correctly update the value. I tried with the clean profile, with no cookie
black/whitelist.

you're talking about seamonkey, not firebird, right?

i can't reproduce on current trunk w/ fresh profile. please check the js
console, and see if there are any errors reported when you change the pref and
close the prefpanel.

Hey guys,

cleared the cookie list (as guanxi said) and now the whole thing works! I think
Mozilla (not Firebird) had/has problems with the old settings (maybe Isaac Hwak
Han is right, but I'm just a consumer of Mozilla not a developer, so please
forgive me if he did tell nonsense but I didn't see it).

Now Mozilla works as expected, great programm, Mozilla rocks!
