apprunner launch fails in low file descriptor situations

Details
I installed M12 today and encountered a problem I have seen with other
applications: poor failure failure recovery when the system is low on file
descriptors. The Mac apparently still has a limit of 384 open files, including
system libraries and fonts.
After installing M12 I launched the application while running Mailsmith 1.1.5,
with the mail browser window open, and DragStrip 3.2.5. Also showing in the
Dragstrip process window: Filesharing Extension, Finder, Folder Actions, Font
Reserve, Instand Palm Desktop, Serial Port Monitor.
My system:
Mozilla M12 from mozilla.org
MacOS 8.6
PowerBook G3 / 4GB / 160MB
Steps to reproduce:
1) Open a program that uses a lot of file descriptors. I use Mailsmith and have
121 mailboxes, which mailsmith apparently keeps open when I have the mail browser
visible. This, in combination with Font Reserve and the system files apparently
use up a lot of file descriptors.
2) Attempt to launch apprunner. It will run for a bit, but then stop. At that
point I can still switch to other applications and quit them, but eventually it
just stops and option-command-esc is the only way to kill it.
After closing the other applications and re-running apprunner, it opens normally.
I'm assigning this a 'normal' severity because I don't know how prevalent this
issue will really be for average users.

M13 is actually worse, in that I cannot have any other programs open when running
the application or I receive MacOS error -42: too many open files. Same
configuration as before.
I've increased the severity to major, since M13 is unusable on my (fairly
standard) powerbook.
Severity: normal → major
Priority: P3 → P2
Assigning all open "nobody@mozilla.org" bugs to "leger@netscape.com" to weed

This appears to be exactly the same issue as in bug 26659, "Mac: Too many files
open triggers startup crash", which has better crash data, so marking this
as a DUP of it.
