Re comment 67 in bug 16409:

Spell checker should have a universal path for the personal
dictionary, rather than in the profile folder. This way, the added words are
known in Composer, Firebird, and Thunderbird.

At the least, Timless's suggestion of a pref option should be done to allow for
this functionality.

Ideally, it should be automatically something more universal, so that without
any prefs modifications, the user gets this functionality. I'm curious if there
is a way to do this.

Saves some time when you use words not in the dictionary, or have a great last
name like me ;-)

If anyone does this, it would also be useful if the user could override the location by setting a pref.

Agreed - as per my comment in bug 360960 comment #0:

So this should not be a fixed path which is shared between ff, tb, etc. but a customisable path that the user can change to be whatever they like. This would allow users to set it to the same path in all programs if they choose, or not (if they want to keep the dictionaries separate for some reason), and also to share the dictionary with other non-moz programs if they wish.

I agree with the overall summary of this bug though, and ideally this customisable location will default to a central Mozilla shared location so that "out-of-the-box" all Moz products share a single user dictionary.

Closing since I don't think those clients are in Mozilla's priority anymore.

The idea of sharing a dictionary between FF, TB, etc. would be useful, but I can understand if the world has moved on and this is no longer considered to be of specific benefit.

However, my point in comment 3 still stands, that the ability to customise the location of the dictionary would be massively beneficial. I find it frustrating having a separate browser spellchecker dictionary to what I use elsewhere on the system, so having a preference for this would be very useful.

The correct answer is probably to re-open bug 360960, which handles the specific request (and which was closed as a dupe of this one). However, I don't seem to have the ability to do that. Can someone please oblige?

Actually, I have figured out how to reopen the other bug - settings have been hidden away behind an edit button (which is not visible when writing a comment), so no need for anyone to do this for me.
